❀️ What is this course about?

This course teaches pre-school teachers, primary school teachers and parents how to effectively develop children's literacy using Jolly Phonics and Orton-Gillingham concepts.

This course is for anyone who is interested in making their literacy classes or home activities more effective and inclusive. This includes:

  • Pre-school teachers, primary school teachers and parents

  • Special education teachers or parents of children with additional needs (ASD, Dyslexia and intellectual disabilities) also stand to benefit from this course.

πŸ“– What will you learn?

Participants will receive valuable insights into:

  • Fundamental principles of Jolly Phonics and how to execute it in ones’ classroom or home

  • Orton-Gillingham concepts such as Syllable Division and Etymology

  • How to adapt one’s literacy class to support children with additional needs (ASD, Dyslexia and intellectual disabilities)

  • Different literacy frameworks, specifically whole word learning approach vs structure synthetic phonics (SSP) approach

By the end of the course, learners will be fully equipped with the tools they need to confidently apply these concepts to their classroom activities and home learning activities and help their students develop the essential literacy skills they need for success.

❀️ What makes this course special?

This is the only course in Singapore conducted by a NIE-trained, former MOE teacher. Get useful insights on how to structure your lessons and adapt it to the MOE primary school curriculum. ✍🏼

Furthermore, this is only workshop in Singapore conducted by a teacher who teaches on a weekly basis in a classroom environment. Learners will receive practical tips and tricks on how to deal with challenging teaching situations and learning difficulties.

✍🏼 What will the assessment comprise of?

There will be a written test and an in-person assessment (role play).

Dates: 10 & 11 July 2023 (Monday and Tuesday)
Time: 9am to 5pm
Venue: 37 Middle Road #02-00 UWEEI Building, Citrine Classroom @ Curious Thoughts Academy, Singapore 188946
Learning Materials: Receive practical teaching aids used by real teachers on a weekly basis, includes 4 blending mats (for CVC, CVCC words etc).

Cost Fees: $648 (Inclusive of 8% GST)
SSG Funding of 50-70% of the course fee is available for all Singaporeans/PRs.
Remaining fees can utilise your SkillsFuture Credits. Any balance can be made through GRAB/ PAYNOW/ Bank Transfer to CTA.

About the Trainer:

Mr Yao Shuohan obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree (Honours) in History (major) and English Language (minor) from the National University of Singapore in 2008. He is NIE-trained and is a former teacher of Swiss Cottage Secondary, Riverside Secondary and St.Joseph's Institution. He has taught thousands of students in Singapore and conducted many English and Phonics workshops in Singapore. Mr Yao is trained in Orton-Gillingham at the Associate Level and is currently an Associate in Training under the Blosser Centre (AOGPE), mentored by Fellow Laurie Cuddy. He is also a certified Smalltalk practitioner.

Mr Yao has been teaching for 10 years and has a knack for making lessons comes alive through drama, stories and games. As the Principal of Curious Thoughts Academy, he oversees the Phonics and English Curriculum in the school. He is sought-after in Singapore for coaching ESL students who come to Singapore with a weak grasp of English, turning them into confident English speakers and writers.
